While Mad Max kills dozens upon dozens of bad guys in the first two films, he never directly kills a single person in this third outing. This actually serves the story, showing that Max has become less vengeful, more merciful in his later years.

The film takes place some fifteen years after The Road Warrior, and according to the script, more than a decade since the last time Max saw another living human being. While the films were produced only a few years apart, you definitely feel the distance in time within the story’s world. Max has grown his hair long, and his old leather police uniform certainly shows the wear and tear of time.

Max treks through Bartertown, a small outpost run by Auntie Entity, probably the best villain of the entire trilogy. She’s more than a screaming barbarian, as Toecutter and Humungus had been. She’s a pragmatist and, in another movie, might have been the hero. She simply wants to redeem humanity and put it back on top of the food chain. If she has to crack a few skulls along the way, so be it, because the fate of all mankind is at stake.

Max’s real journey is to escort a group of children through the wasteland, through Bartertown, and into “Tomorrow-Morrow Land”, which is, of course, Sydney, Australia, or what’s left of it, at least.

Watching Max take them on this perilous journey through the Outback, through Bartertown, and eventually “Beyond Thunderdome” is really an exhilarating, epic adventure, and while many hardcore fans prefer The Road Warrior, Thunderdome is, without a doubt, well worthy of the rest of the trilogy, and many consider it to be the very best of the series.

It takes a little of the hip hop culture of the time, mixes that with the big choreographed dance numbers from classic musicals, and comes out with a really incredible hybrid that is incredibly exhilarating.

Boogaloo Shrimp also has one of the all time coolest dance numbers when he begins to, literally, start break dancing on the ceiling and walls of his bedroom. It’s obvious how they did this scene, by putting the set on a rotating axis, but the way they pulled it off is spectacular, with just a few long, unbroken takes as his girlfriend walks into the room and watches, standing upright on the floor as Shrimp spins and twirls all over the ceiling.

Shabadoo has the movie’s second best scene, when he and his friends have to confront a local street gang after push comes to shove. He chases them out under a bridge where he finally corners them and angrily rips off his vest, marches up to their leader and… Starts popping and locking. Yep, he settles a territory dispute with a dance off. It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s got all the action of a fight scene without any of the unnecessary violence.

Now of course, the movie ends happily. That’s not a spoiler. How else could such an upbeat, positive movie end but with an upbeat, positive ending?

The story follows an unnamed narrator portrayed by Ed Norton. The movie really picks up when the Narrator meets Tyler Durden, a man who has no regard for the rules of normal society. He’s sort of like Cosmo Kramer with a copy of The Stranger and a sense of testosterone driven anger. He’s scary, funny, and sort of inspiring. Definitely a man with ideas. Not all of them good, but at least he’s got ideas.

Tyler Durden is really the heart of the film in.. Many more ways than one. He and the narrator together found the Fight Club, which begins as simply a place where lonely white collar men can fight so as to reaffirm their manhood, but soon grows into something deeper, more frightening, and which has a much greater impact in the grand scheme of things.

From there, it grows into a cultural movement, and a dangerous one, at that. It’s fascinating seeing just how far it goes. It shows that there’s a lot of rage and anger out there. It doesn’t seem that far fetched that so many people would catch on to the ideas Durden puts forth, and while parts of the movie are outlandish, this part is not.

The ending is really something. Since then, it’s become sort of cliche to end with a big twist about who’s who, but at the time, it was really a new idea and it worked really well. A little gimmicky, maybe not even necessary to the purposes of the film, but it was really a surprise when you saw it the first time.

In the years since Fight Club, Ed Norton has become… Well he can be predictable. You always know exactly how he’s going to act from minute to minute. Interestingly, it’s Brad Pitt here who gives one of the best performances, and who would then go on to top it, over and over again, throughout the next several movies of his career. He tops this role in the Coen Brother’s Burn After Reading, and again in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. However, this role, and 12 Monkeys, were probably the two that really showed that he was a real actor, and not just a pretty boy.

The movie is violent and surreal, and winds up making an interesting statement on what it really means to be a man in the modern world. Many viewers misunderstand what the movie is really about in that… Well, it doesn’t provide answers, as many fans think. It only provides the questions.
